Jackson Lake, Wyoming. A clear warm summer night. Camping, I just set my tent up. Suddenly, rolling thunder boomed down Teton canyons. The canyons pointed straight at me, greatly amplifying the sound and vibration. Incredibly loud and powerful. A giants bowling alley. The storm quickly crossed the lake. Straight at me with powerful purple strikes right, left, and center. I saw bolts hit the trees closer than this photo. There was a wood signpost at lake's edge ( do not get the metal tripod ). Holding steady, I clicked off a few shots, I only had a minute or two. I'll always remember this bolt, vividly bent, and reflecting dead center. Wow! I think I got it! Seconds later I was diving into my tent as torrential thunder and rain unleashed. I laid flat and prayed to live. Five or ten minutes it was over. I emerged unscathed to a heavily mud splattered tent. It rained so hard I thought the tent would collapse. It held. Thank God the tent was set up first!

Magical Na Pali Rainbow, Hawaii

Best rainbow ever. After a stunningly grueling wet muddy high water 11 mile hike to Kalalau, this incredible rainbow came out of the ocean over the entire island. Radiating in sunset trade winds, it blew down the island over me, and kept going. The sun set red and orange behind me, lighting up the rainbow. I descended into the Kalalau valley for the first time. Great sign and a blessed trip. Look up, take a break to watch the rainbows, because life is not a cattle drive ! ( I watched an over burdened single file group miss the whole thing ).

Hawaii Honu

Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle. Honu is the Hawaiian name. Such as Honu-lulu. ( Ho New ). I had a lucky chance to photograph these on a perfect summer day. Calm water, I was perched on small cliffs. The turtles were swimming up and smiling at me. We gazed into each others eyes. I had picked up a hitch hiker, who wanted to go here, so I took her. A 19 year old girl from Chicago. Hitch hiking across the country by herself. If it wasn't for her, I would've drove straight home. The photo has been selling for years.

Matted 12x16 was found in storage at a store, that closed. Older print, but looks great. I wrote, " Take what you need, don't take it all. Hawaiian elder," on the back.

Sunset Watchers

Far South Baja. Pacific sunset. Spontaneous creativity led me to wander around the rocks at sunset. The sunsets were so good in Baja and we watched every one. The rocks, pelicans, and surging water offered great compositions. I composed and shot a lot of images, but this one is especially surreal. The sunsets there truly were the best I ever saw. I did some tricks on this one, but its all on film. No computers. It just made it extra surreal the way I was feeling.

1999 - 2000 was a remarkable sunset year. I photographed many great Oregon Coast sunsets before this trip, similar to this, and Baja was exceptional every night. Was something in the air that year?

Art Backs

All my art has writing on the back. Short, long, poetry, sketches, quotes. It changes over time. Putting out some messages, history, stories, websites, or fun. Sometimes I get rolling in the flow, and photos can come with very original poetry. Rarely, I write on the front. This has been a fun thing over the years and the great response from people keeps it evolving. Sometimes my booth feels like a library with all the reading going on. I take pride in making original, personal, signed art, not mass produced cheap things. Anything personally signed means more, and is worth more, as the years go by. It's important to me as an artist to put out a message, not just sell pretty pictures.

Photographs are not attached to boards. Frame both sides if you like. Some do.
